For cell culture applications requiring below ambient in vitro oxygen atmospheres, the SANYO Series MCO-18M (and MCO-36M) cell culture incubator offers both CO2 and O2 control using nitrogen gas to displace ambient air.
MCO-36M(UV)
Stable CO2 and O2 control is achieved through a combination of gas sensors and inject/recovery functions managed by a microprocessor system with P.I.D. (proportional, integral, differential) logic. Combined with the SANYO cabinet design, the overall system controls the in vitro atmosphere of both gas and temperature.
CO2 Control
- The SANYO infrared CO2 sensor is a modulated pyroelectric system developed by SANYO for use in the humidified incubator environment. The SANYO sensor monitors and controls CO2 level over a range of 0% to 20%, with control of ±0.15%.
Oxygen Control
- The MCO-18M multiple gas control system uses a maintenance-free O2 system with a high-precision zirconia electrolyte oxygen sensor. Through accurate determination of the chamber O2 level the microprocessor injects either nitrogen gas or oxygen as required:
- Nitrogen gas (N2) suppresses the ambient oxygen for below-ambient (hypoxic) cell culture protocols over a nominal range of from 1% to 18% oxygen.
- O2 gas is injected for enriched atmospheres over a nominal range above ambient, typically 22% to 80%.
Through the combination of a microprocessor P.I.D. (proportional, integrated and differential) control system for ultra-precise temperature control, plus a cabinet-air sensing system which accurately monitors inside temperature, the SANYO Model MCO-18M (dual chamber MCO-36M) exhibits exceptional precision within ±0.1°C of the setpoint temperature.
Infrared CO2 Sensor
To control the CO2 level, an infrared CO2 sensor is used which is not affected by humidity.

Zirconia O2 Sensor For Maintenance-Free Oxygen Control
- A maintenance-free solid zirconium oxygen sensor is employed to control the O2 level.
- It has a high degree of precision, a long service life, and does not require fine adjustment.
- By accurately monitoring the O2 level, it provides P.I.D. control of the nitrogen (N2) gas supply at low oxygen levels (1% to 18%.
- It also supervises the O2 gas supply at higher oxygen levels (22% to 80%).
- In this way, the zirconia O2 sensor reproduces an O2 atmosphere fully in keeping with the setting conditions.
Because humidity levels fall after the unit doors are opened, the gas supply circuit passes O2 or N2 through water to restore humidity quickly.
When removing or putting specimens in the unit, air inside the chamber escapes causing changes in temperature, humidity and gas concentration.
- To minimize these changes, seven small doors made of reinforced glass have been installed on the inside of the inner door.
- This allows access to the desired section only, and the main triple-door arrangement prevents fluctuations inside the chamber.
Contamination Resistant Design
A wide range of design features prevent contamination.- The automatic stop mechanism for the fan motor and gas valve prevents air outside the chamber from mixing with inside air when the doors are opened.
- An automatic control door heater prevents moisture condensation on the inner door.
- Specific tubes for supplying gases permit autoclave sterilization and are highly mold-resistant.
- The cabinet interior, with rounded corner structure, is made entirely of stainless steel for high chemical resistance and easy cleaning and sterilization.
Alarm and Safety System
When there is any abnormal rise or fall in the temperature, CO2 or O2 level inside the chamber, the lamp and digital indicator flash, and a buzzer sounds to warn you.- In addition, a self-diagnostic function identifies and indicates the location of the malfunction.
- Another convenient standard feature is the automatic nitrogen gas changer mechanism which switches over to the second cylinder once all of the gas in the first cylinder has been depleted.
